Glass Dharma Straw Review and Giveaway!

I have a confession………………

my family uses used plastic straws………..yes, it’s true…..

I would buy the value packs of 200 for $1.99 and we would use several a day between myself, hubby and 2 kids!!

We drink smoothies and juices daily…so that adds up to a lot of straws!!

I never thought about where the straws would end up or how they affect the environment…….I also never thought about the plastic leeching chemicals into our healthy smoothies and juices.

Don’t get me wrong, we ARE a recycling family-we make sure we never throw away plastics and always recycle them…we reuse our glass jars…we use reusable canvas bags….I thought we were doing good!

I started crunching numbers….if we used 4 plastic straws a day that would be 1,460 a year and over a 10 year period that would equal 14,600 straws!!!

With that many straws we could make this chair!!

So, what is another option??

GLASS STRAWS!!!

I recently became a convert-and now I am addicted!!

Glass Dharma

was kind enough to send me 4 glass straws for a review on my blog and I was so excited to test them out.

They came in cute little boxes each labeled according to size.

We received 2 sizes of

DECORATIVE DOTS

Colored dots add both fun and functionality. Used to color code your drinks (or just plain decorate your place setting), they also keep your straw from rolling off of the table or counter. Available in all 4 diameters and 6 colors: Red, Green, Blue, Amber, Clear & Black

We also received 1

BEAUTIFUL BENDS

Style at its best, the Beautiful Bend has a grace all its own.  Slightly bent to “reach” for your lips, this straw is slightly longer and has the same clarity and sparkle of all of our straws. The perfect accompaniment to the well stocked beverage bar.

and 1 of

The Simple Elegance 8″  length drinking straws

Our flagship straw in 3 popular diameters and 2 lengths designed for the average 10 – 12 ounce glass.

I was so excited to use these I whipped up a smoothie right away!!!

It was so fun drinking out of a glass straw!!!

My kids wanted to try each of them out so I whipped up some of their favorite green juice so they could try them out!!

They both kept switching the straws until they each had tested out all 4!!  We have 2 new converts!!!  They LOVE them just as much as me!!!  YAY!!!

I even joined in on some lovely green juice!!!

Such yummy juice and now we can enjoy it without worrying about adding chemicals from using plastic straws!!

I am now addicted to Glass Straws!!!

We can’t stop using them!!!

I honestly think these are such a wonderful idea and I am so excited that I had the chance to try them.  I will be using these from now on-no more plastic straws for me!!!!  I am also thinking what great gifts these straws would make for my smoothie loving friends!!!!  🙂

***Each glass straw comes with a lifetime guarantee against breakage as they are made with the strongest commercially available glass on the market!  If it does break they will repair it or replace it!

They range in price from $6-$10 individually but they have sets available as well.  They also have cool carrying cases and cleaning brushes that you can purchase!!

Glass Dharma was even nice enough to offer one of my readers a $25 gift certificate to use on their website to purchase your own glass straws and accessories!!!

  1. What an interesting idea. Never thought about using glass straws. I do see their benefit. I like the fact that the owner uses several different types of materials to make sure they are safe no matter what.

Actually any of the styles are nice and love the brush it comes with…making it easier to clean those straws if the kids “forget” to rinse.

  2. I found out how simple it is to wash the straws (Simply soak your straw in warm soapy water and then use the cleaning brush).
My favorite straws are the “DECORATIVE DOTS”.
This is the best idea EVER! My husband thought I was crazy when I went through and threw out all of my plastic cups, bowls etc….After realizing my son has tourettes, adhd, asthma, lactose intolerance. I find it hard to believe this is all just coincidental. With everything I don’t have control of with my kids being exposed to. Getting rid of plastic in my house was a NO BRAINER.
I have liked both websites and shared the contest on both FB and Twitter.

  3. I can’t believe they are microwavable and dishwasher safe (according to the FAQ)! Although, I can’t figure out why one would put a straw in the microwave… I have to say that the Beautiful Bends are my favs.

  4. I’ve been wanting glass straws for so long! The only reason I haven’t gotten any yet is because of the cost. I know over time they will end up saving me $ and saving the planet! Winning would give me a chance to help do my part. I too use plastic straws every day.

I found out that it is recommended that you wash them in the dishwasher to sanitize them! Great! That was one of my first questions!

  5. I “liked” Glass Dharma on FB… already “like” Color Wheel Meals… maybe I’ll win straws… and get rid of the plastic…

  6. What a great contest!!! LUV IT! 🙂 idobooks at comcast dot net
    1. I discovered that the dots are colored glass and will not fade 🙂
    2. My favorite style is the Decorative Dots, size 14mm x 9″ long with green dots to match my smoothie 🙂

  7. I’m so excited to try these straws!! I was happy to learn they are made in the USA when I looked them up online. Oh, and know I am following your Tweets too and retweeted about your contest!! (Was already a fan of ColorWheelMeals … and reposted about your contest!! :o)~ )

  8. borosilicate ! Never heard of it but if it helps in less breaking of glass and is not ladened with chemicals I am all for it!
I sure like to bent ones the best.
Even if I don’t win I will be getting these!

  9. I learned to rinse the straws after drinking out of them and to wash them in warm soapy water. You do need the cleaning brush and they are dishwasher safe.

I’ve been thinking about buying glass straws. Thanks for sharing your experience with them.

  10. To enter the contest, I followed the link and read all about the straws. I learned that they can be placed in the dishwasher and microwave. It’s best to soak them in warm soapy water and then scrub them with their special brush though. If they get cloudy they can be soaked in white vinegar, and then scrubbed. They are made in the USA.

  11. I’ve always been curious about glass straws. So I come to read the link to Dharma Glass straw. Borosilicate glass is safe and sound to use. Easy to clean and carry. With a wonderful guarantee too! And great for the environment.
A post about a simple everyday item….the straw. I am glad I stopped by to take a peek today. I learned alot.
    Thank you for sharing.

  12. Beautiful Bends is the one I like.
So great to have found your blog now as well. Thanks for leaving a comment on mine. Can’t wait to explore yours.
Read in one of your posts that you are in MI. Hubby and I were born and raised in Saginaw.
    Peace and Raw Health,

  13. I’m so ashamed; I still don’t own any of those glass straws. One day I’ll get some of the ones with the bend in them.

I like the use for the old school straws. That chair pic is amazing!

    • Yeah, I waited too long to start using them..I didn’t think it was a big deal!! After googling plastic straws I saw a picture of a woman with breast cancer and her breast looked half eaten and tumored…the caption said…from using plastic straws!!! OMG!!! It freaked me out!! It may have not been true but enough to make me think…..gonna order more too!!! 🙂

  14. Ok I became a fan of glass dharma on fb and my favorite straws are the decorative dots-so they don’t roll:) I also learned about borosilicate glass-never heard of it before! Thx!

I visited the Glass Dharma Straw website- one thing I am always stuck on is Dishwasher safe- and they ARE!!! That is so cool to me because I won’t buy the kids straw because they can’t go in the dishwasher and there is no good way to clean them. They actually encourage you to put them in the dishwasher.
