I love organic produce! I also love good deals! Usually the two do not go hand in hand though! I try to buy as much organic produce as possible but there are just some things that are way too overpriced and I really can’t fit it into my budget….not that I really have a budget when it comes to food for my family….I choose to draw the line here.
I can go without new clothes or the latest fashion accessories…my husband can do without his favorite CD’s …my children do not need every toy that comes out…we choose to skimp on these luxuries in life and use our money where it is important…..FOOD!! Not just any food but nourishing food….the kind that costs more but has so many beneficial nutrients that it is worth every penny!!
I am always on the hunt for organic produce on sale or marked down….when I do find it I tend to buy A LOT!!!! This past summer a local store had organic raspberries on sale 10 packs for $10 and by the end of the week I had washed, packaged and froze over 50 packs!!! I am sad to say that they didn’t even last long though as we feasted on raspberries during this time…..LOL!
Anyways, my point is I love a good deal and especially when it is on organic produce.
So, I had heard about this company called Door to Door Organics …they are a company that delivers organic produce right to your door!!! I figured it would be costly, so I didn’t look much into it until one day they ran a special through Groupon…it was a box of organic produce delivered to your door for $16…I figured I would give it a try!!!
Once I placed my order they gave me my delivery day and I also had the opportunity to substitute some of the produce, I could choose fruit or veggie boxes, or I could choose more produce to be placed in my order additionally. I choose the fruit box which came with:
- 1 pomegranate
- 1 package strawberries
- 1 mango
- 3 Bosc pears
- 3 Bartlett pears
- 3 Red pears
- 4 granny smith apples
- 4 honeycrisp apples
- 4 valencia oranges
- 2 grapefruit
- 1 lime
- 2 avocadoes
Normally, this box would cost $33.00 total…no delivery charges….I paid $16 for this on a one time only basis. I figured out the cost of these items if I were to buy them at a local grocery store or at a specialty store like Whole Foods and I know it is much cheaper this way!! Also, I love that you can substitute any item in your order! For example, lets say I do not want the pears…then I just choose something to go in its place!! I also love the fact that you can add on to your order…..
I decided to add on some extras:
- 4 Gala apples @ $0.70 each
- 4 limes @ $0.55 each
- 2 pomegranates @ $2.00 each
- 10 valencia oranges @ $0.65 each
- 2 lemons @ $0.95 each
My delivery day was on a Wednesday, I heard a knock on the door bright and early and opened it to see a box marked Door to Door Organics.
I couldn’t open it fast enough, the fruit was cold, and firm and beautifully packaged!!!
All in all this is a great deal…all of the produce is organic and local when possible/available. I am excited about using this company especially throughout the winter when organic is harder to come by….I am even thinking about starting a co-op which will save even more!!! If you live by me and you are interested please let me know!!! 🙂
