What is the most refreshing summertime drink? Fresh lemonade or limeade!!! Kids love to drink this on a hot summer day, so don’t discount this as a fruit serving!!! If you are making fresh homemade lemonade or limeade it can count as a serving towards your 5-9 F/V’s a day!!! Lemons and limes are an excellent source of Vitamin C and they contain unique flavonoid compounds that have antioxidant and anticancer properties. They contain limonoids that have been shown to fight cancers of the mouth, skin, lung, breast, stomach, and colon. These citrus fruits sometimes are misunderstood and people think because they are citrus that they have an acidic effect on our bodies. So let’s talk about this.
All foods are either acid or alkaline forming in our bodies. A foods acid or alkaline forming tendency in the body has nothing to do with the actual PH of the food itself. Our bodies need both acid and alkaline foods in a ratio of 25% for acidic forming and and 75% for alkalizing forming. This ratio will keep our bodies blood PH level around a healthy 7.4. Unfortunately, though, most of us consume too many acid forming foods causing our bodies to have an unbalanced environment which then leads to over acidity and weakens the bodies systems and robs our bodies of important electrolytes such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Acid forming foods are: meat, sugar, dairy, grains, carbonated beverages, artificial sweeteners, and pharmaceutical drugs. All of these things can cause an overly acidic environment in our bodies when we are over-consuming or not eating enough alkaline foods to compensate. Alkaline foods would consist of most fruits/vegetables and some nuts and seeds. To view a list of both acid and alkaline foods please click here. Citrus fruits are very alkalizing in the body and they are a wonderful addition to anyone’s diet. Most of us are not going to peel a lemon/lime and eat it like an orange, so the best way to consume this alkalizing food is to create a great summer time drink!!!
