This is the third berry I have chosen to highlight in my posts. I hope you have noticed a common theme for all of the berries- they are all superfoods that are high in antioxidants, vitamins, and phytonutrients and low in calories. The blackberry is unique in that it contains Salicylate which is a natural pain reliever and is said to aid with sore throats and mild tooth aches. They have recently been recognized as a leading source of compounds thought to produce health benefits for women. Blackberries contain high concentrations of phytoestrogens (plant estrogens) that may prevent breast and cervical cancer. Daily consumption of these and other berries delay the aging process because of the high antioxidant levels. 1 cup has 70 calories and 8 grams of fiber. It also is a great source of Folate, Potassium, Vitamin C, Manganese and Magnesium.
Great ways to enjoy blackberries
- Make a salad!!
Toss mixed greens, blackberries, pecans, and avocado together and top with a balsamic vinaigrette.
- Make a fruit salad!
Mix blackberries, kiwi, honeydew, and pineapple together and enjoy!
- Make a smoothie!
1 cup blackberries, 1 cup blueberries, 1 cup raspberries, 1/2 cup water, and 1-2 tbsp. of sweetener if desired
